HARRISBURG, Penn.—The Pennsylvania Credit Union Association is marking its 80th birthday.
Founded as the Pennsylvania Credit Union League in December of 1934 by 14 CU leaders and with help from credit union pioneer Roy Bergengren, the creation of the league followed the 1933 passage of the State Credit Union Act and was initially chaired by H. Andrew Hanemann, treasurer of Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union, according to the PCUA.
The PCUA said the League constitution was signed by leaders from Allentown Teachers Credit Union, Swift Philadelphia Credit Union, Williamsport Teachers Credit Union, Building and Needle Trade Workers Credit Union, McKeesport Postal Employees Credit Union, Reading Postal Employees Credit Union, Lancaster Postal Employees Credit Union, Pittsburgh Teachers Credit Union, West Market Credit Union, Philadelphia Teachers Credit Union, Harrisburg Postal Employees Credit Union, Kemba Pittsburgh Credit Union, and Swift Harrisburg Employees Credit Union.
At the time it was founded there were more than 2,500 credit unions operating in 42 states, including Pennsylvania. Eventually the number of CUs in Pennsylvania would reach nearly 1,600. Today, there are 463 credit unions in the Keystone State, serving 3.8 million members.
To mark the Association’s 80-year anniversary, the PCUA reported its employees donated more than 188 pounds of food and spent a day of volunteering at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.
