Alabama Telco Unveils New Name

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The $601-million Alabama Telco Credit Union has changed its name to Avadian Credit Union.

The credit union said it made the move to reflect a broad field of membership that now includes more than 600 select employee groups and local communities.

“We spent several years of doing extensive, thorough research and review to find our new name,” the credit union said in a statement on its website. “We wanted something that didn't tie us to one business or group. Something that sounded unique like the service we provide, the employees we hire and the members we serve. Avadian is one name that we kept coming back to. It stuck with us. You will not find Avadian in the dictionary. There is no defined meaning for it; no real definition.

Avadian CU CEO Linda Cencula appears in video explaining new name.

And we like it that way. We don't want to define it by words but rather feelings and experience. When you say or think about Avadian, we want you to recall the little things you enjoy about being a member. Those moments when we helped improve your financial well-being, provided a smart solution in a time of need, surprised you with a token of our appreciation, or just smiled as you ran your errand for the day. That's what we want to stick with you.”

The credit union was founded in 1934 to serve employees of Bellsouth.
