HUTCHINSON, Kan.—It’s popular in credit unions to be a part of the “heartland.”
The $230-million Hutchinson Credit Union announced it is changing its name to Heartland Credit Union, becoming the ninth credit union in the country to have “Heartland” in its name.
In its case, Hutchinson CU said it is making the move to reflect an evolving membership in which more than half now live outside Hutchinson, Kan., and 45% live outside the county. The credit union, founded in 1948 as Hutchinson County Teachers CU, is just the latest to use the Heartland name, and not even the first in Kansas, which already has a Heartland Community Credit Union in Kansas City.
There is a Heartland Federal Credit Union in Dayton, Ohio, and state-chartered Heartland Credit Unions in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois, plus an Iowa Heartland Credit Union in Mason City, an Indiana Heartland in Kokomo, and a Heartland Area in Omaha.
