MILWAUKEE—Another Wisconsin credit union and its members have been victimized by ATM card skimmers.
Educators CU here is the latest FI to fall victim to the growing number of ATM card skimming attacks, with 500 members reported having their data stolen.
Police are investigating the hack that is believed to have occurred between Sept. 6 and Sept. 12.
The credit union said that so far very little fraud has been detected on the compromised cards.
“It’s nerve-wracking,” member Kyle Gray, who had $2,500 stolen from his checking account, told WISN. “My nerves have been on edge since I noticed that. You're taking money from my four kids. You're not allowing me to do things I'm supposed to be doing with them.”
Gray said he had to delay paying his mortgage despite the credit union restoring the stolen cash to his account.
“We want to make sure that if a member's account has been compromised for whatever reason, that the money gets back to their account as soon as possible,” Educators Credit Union’s Jim Henderson told the news station.
The credit union has been offering members a new downloadable app that allows them to turn their debit card off and on via their smartphone.
UW Credit Union in Madison has also reported issues with card skimmers on ATMs.
