Apple Pay Rival CurrentC Hacked

BOSTON—CurrentC, the fledgling payments system from the Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX), was hacked this week during testing, according to reports from the company.

MCX reported Wednesday that some users’ e-mail addresses may have been obtained by crooks within the last 36 hours, but no other personal data (see letter below).

The hack comes on the heels of the Apple Pay launch, a new payments system that uses tokenization and is considered to be more secure than current mage-stripe payment methods.

With the launch of CurrentC expected next year, several MXC participating retailers—Walmart, CVS and Rite Aid—have blocked the use of Apple Pay in their stores.

Many merchants are onboard with CurrentC because the MCX system utilizes users' bank account information rather than credit cards, avoiding card transaction fees.
