RICHMOND, Va.—Another sign that crooks may be increasing their ATM card skimming efforts, Virginia Credit Union reports it is reissuing plastic and handing out refunds as a result of local skimming attacks.
The $2.7-billion CU told NBC12 that the attacks are impacting thousands of local cardholders and that the CU started getting reports of suspicious transactions within the past week.
"They are very devious, and very good," VCU's Glenn Birch told NBC12. "This has been happening at several financial institutions in our area in recent months."
Virginia Credit Union stated that it believes the crooks obtained 2,016 cardholders' security information and money at two of its locations in central Virginia. Thieves had a device installed at a third location, but Birch told NBC12 the CU found it before any thefts were made.
VCU said they've notified each person affected, reissued debit cards, and refunded any stolen money.
