Back To School: Two Education CUs Chalk Up New Names

MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y. - Hudson River Teachers Federal Credit Union has changed its name. The new name is Hudson River Financial FCU, which the credit union said better reflects the credit union's field of membership. It had carried its original name since 1938.

"Our new name Hudson River Financial Federal Credit Union better reflects who we are - a credit union that services a broad range of members, broader than only teachers," said CEO Thomas J. Powers. “Having teachers in our name perpetuated the misperception that we only serve teachers, which has not been so for a very long time. So, we're happy to now have a new name - and one that better conveys the broad-reaching credit union that we are.”

In addition to serving teachers in 29 school districts in northern Westchester and Rockland counties, Hudson River Financial Federal Credit Union membership is also open to all students, employees and members of the Boards of Education of those school districts, members of select labor unions, companies, and partner groups based in Northern Westchester and Rockland, family members of those in membership-eligible groups, and individuals retired from those member groups.

Meanwhile, in Battle Creek, Mich., United Educational Credit Union plans to introduce a new name and brand: BlueOx Credit Union, which is set to roll out starting in 2016.

UECU said the name change reflects an expanded FOM beyond its original educational base to a community charter open to anyone in nine counties in southwestern Michigan.

“There’s an old proverb that rings very true for UECU throughout this exciting process -- ‘Footprints on the sands of time are not made by sitting down,’ ” UECU President and CEO Fran Godfrey said in a released statement.

The $122-million UECU has 14,000 members.
