Busy Week In Washington: Government Shutdown Looms As House Takes On Tax Reform

WASHINGTON—It’s an active week in Washington, with a possible government shutdown looming and the House Ways and Means Committee beginning to mark up the tax reform bill.

Congress is in session and will need to pass another continuing resolution or complete appropriations to avoid a government shutdown as current funding expires Friday.

“DCUC has proactively engaged its members to prepare for a potential government shutdown. Last week, we urged defense credit unions to communicate with their members about available financial assistance programs to mitigate financial stress,” said DCUC Chief Advocacy Officer Jason Stverak.

Turning to tax reform legislation, both the Defense Credit Union Council and America’s Credit Unions have been rallying support from their members, with both groups issuing action alerts, asking their members to send letters to Capitol Hill defending the CU tax break.

“We do think that having a strong grassroots message and ensuring that members of Congress understand how important credit unions are to consumers is an incredibly powerful message, especially to those members of Congress who are starting to write the tax bill,” said ACU Chief Advocacy Officer Carrie Hunt.

“We have long anticipated threats to credit unions’ tax status and remain committed to educating lawmakers on the vital role credit unions play in serving Main Street America,” said Stverak. “DCUC continues to engage with Congress, and stressing the negative consequences of any policy changes that jeopardize this status.”
