Busy Week In Washington With Numerous CU-Backed Bills Up For Votes; Hearings Scheduled

WASHINGTON—It’s a busy week in Washington, with both the House and Senate back in session following delays caused by the blizzard.

“There’s so much going on it’s hard to know where to begin,” observed Ryan Donovan, Chief Advocacy Officer at CUNA.

On the agenda:

  • The House will be taking up several matters under the suspension of the rules. Among them is HR 766, the Financial Institution Customer Protection Act, which seeks to bring an end to the Department of Justice’s Operation Choke Point and which has the backing of both NAFCU and CUNA; HR 3700, the Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act, and HR 1675, the Encouraging Employee Ownership Act.
  • The biggest item on the Senate’s agenda is an energy bill.
  • The House Financial Services Committee today will hold a markup of its Views and Estimates on the U.S. budget for fiscal year 2017. Last week, the committee did release the chairman’s mark of the document, which provides some insight into the committee’s focus for the year. Of note, the document indicates that the committee will continue its focus on the oversight of the Dodd-Frank Act and CFPB, including CFPB reform legislation.
  • The House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations today will hold a hearing titled “Unsustainable Federal Spending and the Debit Limit.”
  • On Wednesday, the Financial Services Committee will hold a hearing, “Trading With the Enemy: Trade-Based Money Laundering is The Growth Industry in Terror Finance.”

Later today NAFCU will also host a webinar on “ACH Payment Rules: What’s New and What’s on the Horizon.” The webinar will run from 2-3:30 p.m. ET.

Also this week, on Wednesday in Louisville, Ken., the CFPB will host a field hearing on checking account access. Among those testifying will be Jim Spradlin, CEO of Park Community Credit Union. The hearing will be live-streamed by CFPB.

Later this week FASB will host a roundtable discussion at its offices at which a number of credit union representatives will be on hand.
