WASHINGTON—As CUNA promised earlier this month, the trade association has distributed its revised bylaws to member CUs and the leagues.
In December, the CUNA board voted in favor of presenting to its affiliated member CUs the most significant revision of its bylaws since the association was formed in 1934. Under the proposed bylaws changes, credit unions will likely be given a choice of belonging to their state league only, belonging only to CUNA, or having membership in the traditional league/CUNA model.
In its bylaws amendment packet, CUs have a voting ballot (see image), a letter from Patrick Jury providing an overview of the key bylaws changes and package contents—which include proposed restated bylaws, a comparison of the current and proposed bylaws, and current bylaws.
Jury, chairman of the CUNA corporate governance committee, in his letter stated that the new governance structure “will allow CUNA to modernize and become more open, responsive and accountable to all of our members. These proposed bylaws are an important component of that.”
CUNA Board Chair Susan Streifel previously said the voting period will open once the bylaws materials are distributed, and will close mid-March. Streifel said the voting period purposely spans the dates of the upcoming Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington (Feb. 21-25).
