CUs In Juno’s Path Hunkering Down

NEW YORK—As Juno blasts the Northeast, CUs in the path of the mighty winter storm are hunkering down Tuesday, closing their doors and hoping for improved conditions on Wednesday.

Although many CU operations are closed today, much of New York and northern New Jersey escaped the worst parts of the storm, but areas to the north, including Boston, are seeing significant snow.

Credit unions on their websites are telling members to stay at home and rely on mobile banking to access their accounts.

More than 50 million people are expected to tough out blizzard conditions Tuesday, as heavy snow and high winds forced several states to allow only emergency vehicles on the streets. Statewide road travel bans were in effect for New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Municipal CU here stated on its website early Tuesday morning that it is closing for the day due to “safety concerns” for members and employees. All MCU branches are shut down and members are asked to check nymcu.org for updates as to when offices could reopen.

In Smithfield, R.I., Navigant Credit Union closed all branch locations, its corporate office, and its call center. In Fitchburg, Mass., IC Federal Credit Union urged members to “stay safe” use ATMs where they could access them, and rely on mobile banking as all locations are closed Tuesday.

Connex Credit Union in North Haven, Conn., shut down operations and asked members to check its website Wednesday morning for an update.

Forecasters were downgrading the storm's potential impact in some areas. A blizzard warning was canceled for New York City. And initial estimates of up to three feet of snow hammering parts of the region were revised to 10 to 25 inches. Near hurricane-force winds of up to 64 mph were expected to cause white-out conditions, widespread power outages and coastal flooding in some areas.
