Citigroup Hit With Lawsuit Alleging Sexual Harassment And Gender Bias At Top Levels

NEW YORK — Citigroup has been sued by a former managing director who alleges she was pushed out of the bank after experiencing sexual harassment from a senior executive, Reuters reported.

Julia Carreon, formerly Citi’s global head of platform and experiences, filed the complaint Monday in Manhattan federal court, claiming misconduct by Andy Sieg, who oversees Citi’s wealth management division and is among the firm’s top leaders.

According to the lawsuit, Carreon said Sieg initially supported her career and helped secure a promotion after joining Citi in October 2023, but later engaged in what she described as sustained sexual harassment, manipulation, and grooming, Reuters reported. She alleges his behavior created a hostile work environment that undermined her professional standing.

Carreon further claims Citi’s human resources department contributed to her exit by launching what she characterized as a retaliatory effort to remove her, consistent with what the complaint calls a long-standing culture of gender bias at the bank, Reuters said. She ultimately left Citi in June 2024.

Citigroup denied the allegations, saying in a statement that the lawsuit lacks merit and that it plans to contest the claims through the legal process, Reuters reported. Sieg is not named as a defendant, and Carreon’s legal team did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The suit seeks unspecified damages for alleged racial discrimination under federal law, as well as racial and sexual discrimination under New York state and city statutes.

The case follows prior media reports, including from Bloomberg News and the Financial Times, that raised concerns about Sieg’s management style and treatment of employees, Reuters noted. Citi is also defending another lawsuit from managing director Ardith Lindsey, who has alleged violent threats by a different supervisor and a broader culture of sexual harassment and gender discrimination at the bank.
