Congressmen Pledge Support For CU Tax Exemption

WASHINGTON–Even with the U.S. tax code likely to get the scrutiny of Congress this session, the credit union tax exemption will not be threatened, according to a number of members of Congress who addressed CUNA’s Governmental Affairs Conference here.

Among those pledging their faith to the tax exemption were:

  • Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, who said, “I want to be clear that no proposals to change the tax status of credit unions will not be considered.”
  • Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI), who told credit unions he will be a “staunch defender” of the credit union tax exemption.
  • Rep. Pete Aguilar, the newly elected Democrat from California who is a former employee of Arrowhead Credit Union, who made it clear credit unions were a huge influence on him and who expressed his strong support for CUs.
