Credit Union Employee Accused Of Stealing $75K From Member Accounts In Six-Month Scheme

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A Gateway Credit Union employee is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly stealing nearly $75,000 from member accounts over the past six months, according to court documents.

The alleged scheme came to light on July 4, when credit union officials contacted Springfield police with documentation and surveillance footage. The materials reportedly show employee Laila Payne conducting unauthorized transfers and withdrawals between six member accounts, ultimately leading to $74,700 in cash being taken, KEZI reported.

Payne, who joined the credit union in January 2024, now faces several charges, including four counts of first-degree theft, two counts of aggravated first-degree theft, and one count of computer crime, KEZI reported.

According to police, Payne admitted to the thefts during questioning. The investigation remains ongoing.
