WASHINGTON—Representatives from NAFCU, CUNA and the National Credit Union Foundation made their way to Capitol Hill Tuesday to be part of 2016 Financial Literacy Day and to share the benefits of credit unions with those in attendance.
NAFCU representatives at the event included: Vice President of Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler, Director of Political Affairs Dan O’Brien, Associate Director of Legislative Affairs Chad Adams, Director of Public Relations Patty Briotta, Associate Director of Political Affairs Meghan Brady and Legislative and PAC Assistant Matt Schwartz.
Staff from CUNA and the National Credit Union Foundation passed out materials and promotional items touting the credit union difference. Those who stopped by the CUNA/Foundation booth learned about not-for-profit financial cooperatives, and how the model benefits consumers and the marketplace in general, CUNA explained.
This year’s honorary co-hosts for the event were Sens. Jack Reed (D-RI), Joe Donnelly (D-IN), and Tim Scott (R-SC). All three are members of the Senate Banking Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Protection.
The event began in 2003 and is sponsored by the Council for Economic Education, Junior Achievement and the Jump$tart Coalition. It features exhibitors from the financial education community as well as presentations from speakers about top financial literacy issues.
“April is National Financial Literacy Month, which puts the focus on helping consumers maintain a solid understanding of personal financial matters that will serve them well through all life stages,” NAFCU stated, adding that its upcoming Economic & CU Monitor report will further detail credit unions’ financial literacy efforts.
