WASHINGTON—Amid a great deal of change and unrest within credit unions, the Defense Credit Union Council is calling for a meeting of leaders within the CU movement.
DCUC told CUToday.info it has reached out to a large number of industry trade groups and organizations, including America’s Credit Unions, state leagues, NASCUS, NACUC, NACUSO, the African American Credit Union Coalition, Filene… proposing a Teams meeting Monday.
The move comes shortly after the Trump Administration fired NCUA Democratic Board Members Todd Harper and Tanya Otsuka. The move has sparked several questions about the future of the industry and whether now is the time to synchronize efforts.
"I believe we have all seen enough turmoil in the last few weeks regarding industry changes,” said DCUC President and CEO Anthony Hernandez. “Whether it is the industry's tax exemption, NCUA independence, the ongoing Credit Card Competition Act, or even preserving the CDFI Fund — every day seems like one crisis after another."
"While now is not the time for panic, it is time to unite and disseminate actionable information so we can all provide the requisite amount of ‘mass’ at each decisive point in our collective advocacy efforts,” Hernandez continued.
DCUC is proposing the virtual meeting for Monday, April 21, at 1pm ET.
“Too much is at stake to let this moment pass, and we hope to come out of next Monday's meeting with a stronger course of action for the sake our industry," Hernandez said.
“This is an opportunity for leadership in the industry by bringing all interested parties together to discuss threats and concerns that are facing every credit union,” said DCUC Chief Advocacy Officer Jason Stverak. “We look forward to working with all of our strategic partners and everyone in the credit union industry to address these emerging issues.”
