EL PASO, Texas–FirstLight FCU has been chosen as the Army Credit Union of the Year.
Karl Murphy, president and CEO of FirstLight FCU, along with other credit union officials will be awarded the national-level award at a ceremony attended by Fort Bliss leadership during the Defense Credit Union Council conference in August.
"To be recognized as the national credit union of the year is a real honor, second only to that of serving our members," said Murphy in a statement published by the Cornerstone CU League. "I will accept this award on behalf of every employee at FirstLight who gives the highest level of service and commitment to the community, and all of our members in and around El Paso, Texas, and Las Cruces, New Mexico."
According to the Defense CU Council, in reviewing nominations for the Army Bank and Credit Union of the Year award it considers many aspects of the financial institution's operation. These criteria include service exceeding normal requirements; financial education and contributions made to financial counseling programs; products, services, or programs developed to combat predatory lending practices; community support; special services provided by command request, and an ability to demonstrate a professional attitude and financial leadership.
The DCUC said that FirstLight Federal Credit Union met all these requirements and exceeded them in many ways. With an involvement in literally hundreds of El Paso County and Dona Ana County events, programs, charities, and outreach efforts, FirstLight is an important part of the community and provides assistance to many area groups, including unique services for the soldiers of Fort Bliss.
The $884 million FirstLight serves 106,591 members.
