Following Bipartisan House Action, America’s Credit Unions Looks To Senate For Similar Cooperation On Housing Bills

WASHINGTON— After the House advanced 16 bills last week with broad bipartisan support, America’s Credit Unions said it’s optimistic the Senate will show similar unity as it takes up a key housing package this week.

With the House now in August recess, the Senate remains in session briefly to consider a slate of 20 housing-related bills in the Banking Committee.

“There’s a good pathway to reform because almost every single House bill passed with broad bipartisan vote, which is really great to see—Republicans and Democrats working together on some common-sense, modest reforms,” said Greg Mesack, senior vice president of advocacy for America’s Credit Unions.

Mesack said he expects the Senate Banking Committee to move smoothly through its markup process.

“I expect it will be a very easy bipartisan markup,” he added.’

Several hearings of interest to credit unions are scheduled for Wednesday, including:

  • 2 p.m. ET: Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Border Management, Federal Workforce, and Regulatory Affairs hearing on Congress’s role in the post-Loper Bright regulatory landscape;
  • 2:30 p.m. ET: Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law hearing on protecting Americans’ online data
  • 3:30 p.m. ET: Senate Special Committee on Aging hearing on combating elder abuse and neglect
