TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, which tore through the Florida Peninsula early Thursday, leaving a path of destruction from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic, the League of Southeastern Credit Unions has again pledged its support for CUs and their members.
LSCU President Samantha Beeler, as she did following Hurricane Helene, said the league is moving with efforts to help rebuild lives.
“As Hurricane Milton leaves its devastating mark, our thoughts are with the more than three million people without power and the countless more who sustained damages during this powerful storm,” said Beeler. “Credit unions and their members are feeling the full force of this storm as damaging winds exceeding 120 mph, life-threatening storm surges, tornadoes, and extreme flooding swept through the state. The safety and well-being of our members, their families, and our communities are of the utmost importance. To our credit union community, stay safe and know that we are here for you every step of the way.”
Beeler said that while authorities sift through the devastation left by Milton, multiple fatalities have been identified—ten people, according to news reports Thursday afternoon.
“The road to rebuilding and recovery for so many begins now. We are doing everything in our power to assist those affected by Hurricane Milton. Our Southeastern Credit Union Foundation is mobilizing resources ready to be deployed to the hardest-hit areas. For those in immediate need, our grant program is available to credit union employees and volunteers, and we encourage those impacted to apply,” she said.
Beeler encouraged credit unions to consider donating to the league’s Disaster Relief Fund.
“In times of such immense need and in light of the cooperative spirit of credit unions – especially ahead of International Credit Union Day, every donation can make a difference. We've seen firsthand how these contributions can help rebuild lives, restore branches, and reunite communities,” she said.
