Former Manager Is Sentenced For Theft of Funds

MT. PLEASANT, Iowa—Lori Kristine Bentler, a former credit manager at M.H.I. CU here, has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for her part in fraudulently issuing nearly a quarter-million dollars in loans to herself and family members.

Bentler pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud.

Bentler’s prison sentence will be followed by five years of supervised release. She was also ordered to pay $249,250.51 in restitution.

Bentler entered into a plea agreement, admitting to issuing and refinancing several loans to herself, her sister, and her daughter, without the required permission from the board of directors of M.H.I. Credit Union.

“Bentler concealed many, if not all, of the unapproved loans from the board of directors and exposed M.H.I. Credit Union to a risk of loss on those loans,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Kevin VanderSchel in a statement.

Bentler admitted to issuing the loans between November 2009 and September 2011, according to VanderSchel.
