Former State Senator (And CU’s Attorney) Pleads Guilty To Theft

PASCAGOULA, Miss.—A former Mississippi state senator has pleaded guilty to five counts of embezzlement from a credit union.

Tommy Robertson entered his guilty plea in Jackson County Circuit Court here after having been charged with allegedly taking more than $484,000 from Singing River Federal Credit Union.

Prosecutors said the embezzlement occurred while Robertson was employed as the board attorney at Singing River. Robertson, 59, also served as a state senator for 16 years.

Robertson pleaded guilty to one count. In exchange for his plea, the remaining four counts will be dismissed.

According to the indictment, Robertson used his position as board attorney to embezzle the funds, with $379,592 of that total coming from funds intended for a construction loan for Thomas and Kendra Buck. The indictment states Robertson used the funds for his own use in April of 2013.

Sentencing has been set for a later date.
