Former Teller Gets Three-Year Term

LYNCHBURG, Va.—Teresa Wieringo Humphries, a former teller at the now-defunct Lynrocten Federal Credit Union who was involved in a scheme that cost the CU more than $12 million, has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison. Humphries pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement.

Humphries’ plea follows that of co-defendant Linda Sue Newcomb, the former CU’s manager, who also pleaded guilty to federal charges in the scheme that led to the conservatorship and liquidation of Lynrocten Federal. She had been head teller since the mid-1980s but schemed with Humphries on a long-running scam involving false loans. At the time it was seized, authorities said 90% of the credit union’s loans were bogus.

Both Newcomb and Humphries have been ordered to pay more than $12 million in restitution.
