SALINA, Kans.—A man apparently hoodwinked a CU into raising his credit limit so he could withdraw $9,800 from an ATM with a prepaid card.
Local police stated that the theft occurred at a Salina office of Great Plains FCU in early September but was reported Oct. 21. Capt. Mike Sweeney told Salina.com that the fraudster entered the credit union and wanted to get a cash advance on a RushCard prepaid Visa credit card. The man showed his driver’s license and wanted to get $10,000.
A CU employee told him that in order to get that amount of money, his credit limit would have to be increased, Sweeney said. He said the man placed a phone call, allegedly to the credit card company, and a person on the phone gave the employee instructions to increase the man’s credit limit.
Sweeney said the employee pushed buttons on a cash machine as instructed, and the man was given $9,800. The transaction turned out to be fraudulent, and police are investigating the incident.
The $290-million Great Plains FCU is headquartered in Joplin, Mo.
