BOULDER, Colo.–Elevations Credit Union has partnered with the 5430 Alliance to open up savings accounts for the children of football players at the University of Colorado. In all, eight Buffaloes players have children and the accounts have been opened with $2,121 in each account.
The initiative is the result of a call by UC Head Football Coach Deion Sanders who was seeking a financial institution that would open such accounts. The $2,121 figure is in honor of Sanders, who wore that number during his college and professional athletic career.
According to On3.com, during a team meeting Sanders called the eight players down to the front and announced, “…It ain’t like you’re in trouble. You ain’t done nothing wrong. Actually, matter of fact, you did something right. A child is not a mistake. A child is an opportunity to mature you, grow you, advance you, and give you some skills. Y’all know how I am about fathering. You know I would not hire a coach unless he’s a great father. I don’t hire a coach that’s a deadbeat, I don’t hire a coach that’s not taking care of his responsibilities. I would never hire a man that he says he’s going to look after y’all but he won’t look after his. That don’t make sense to me.”
With that, Sanders shared the news of the deal with those fathers on his team, On3.com reported.
