Girardi Steps Down As CEO; Successor Named

Betty Girardi and husband Nick

WOBURN, Mass.—Betty Girardi has retired as CEO of Woburn Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union after being part of the organization for more than 40 years.

Jim McCorkle, has been tapped to succeed Girardi, who headed the credit union for 20 years. Previously, McCorkle was president and CEO of the $20-million Touchstone FCU in Wilmington, Mass.

Girardi started with the $42-million CU back when it had only two employees and $500,000 in assets. Today, WMEFCU has a staff of ten.

"I'll miss it, of course," Girardi told the Daily Times Chronical. "The thing I always enjoyed the most is working with the people who live in the city. Woburn is a great place to live, and the people are wonderful. I'm still at a point where it (retirement) really hasn't sunken in yet. It's still kind of sad for me because I've been there for so long."

In its early years WMEFCU was tucked into a corner of Woburn City Hall, in the basement. The credit union's office later moved to Abbott Street near the city’s post office before finally moving to its current home at 8 Cedar St. in East Woburn.

"I've definitely loved my job," Girardi told the Daily Times. "The thing we've always tried to maintain at the credit union is a personal touch. Working one-on-one with our members and knowing you're helping them are the best parts of my job."
