SAN DIEGO—San Diego County Credit Union has set a new Guinness World Record for the most paper collected in a 24-hour period.
The mark was set during the SDCCU Super Shred Event, which collected a total of 584,350 pounds of paper that was then shredded.
More than 10,000 people showed up at Qualcomm Stadium—home of the NFL’s San Diego Chargers—for the event. Throughout the day, donations were also collected for the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, raising more than $8,000.
The $6.9-billion SDCCU has hosted the free Shred Day since 2007, and during that time has recycled more than 1.8 million pounds of paper, saving more than 15,500 trees.
"SDCCU is committed to helping our customers and the community protect their confidential data and privacy," said Teresa Halleck, SDCCU president and CEO in a release. "We are dedicated to preventing identity theft as well as help the community go green with our online banking services, such as eStatements and eReceipts.
"SDCCU would like to thank the entire community for coming together to help shred our way to a new world record and be a part of history,” continued Halleck. “The response from the community was overwhelming—we are grateful for the generous show of support.”
