WASHINGTON—House Republicans have chosen French Hill (R-AR) to lead the Financial Services Committee, a move credit union advocates support.
Washington credit union advocate John McKechnie said the choice is sound because Hill has banking experience.
“Chairman Hill is not your average House member—he’s actually sat behind the desk at a small bank, knows his way around a balance sheet, knows how regulations affect how consumers receive their financial services,” McKechine said. “I read his ascension to the chairmanship as a positive for market-oriented policies. It also should be a reminder to credit unions that more people from our ranks should step forward for public office. It would be a good day if one of our own had their hands on a gavel in Congress.”
Defense Credit Union Council President and CEO Anthony Hernandez, who recently visited Hill with DCUC Chief Advocacy Officer Jason Stverak, congratulated Hill.
“DCUC looks forward to collaborating with him and the Committee to address key issues impacting financial services, credit unions and the military community,” Hernandez said.
America's Credit Unions responded to the House decision.
"America’s Credit Unions congratulates Congressman French Hill for securing the chairman’s gavel for the Financial Services Committee in the 119th Congress. As a friend of the credit union movement, we couldn’t be more thrilled to have Congressman Hill advancing the industry’s priorities with the important work this committee takes on," said Jim Nussle, ACU president/CEO.
