How 1 CU Is Turning Old Plastic Cards Into Beautiful Music

SUMMERLAND, B.C.–Sumerland Credit Union here is helping to make music with its old plastic cards.

The credit union is recycling the plastic cards into guitar plectrums that are then made available to young music students.

According to the Northern Star, Summerland CU stores all kinds of plastic cards in secure boxes at its branches. The cards, which are typically shredded and then become landfill, now have the personal details and security chips removed, and are then cut into guitar plectrums using a cutter that resembles a stapler, the Northern Star reported.

The plectrums are given to the Northern Rivers Conservatorium who distribute them to their music students.

The credit union’s CEO Margot Sweeny sees it as not only a great way to help the environment, but also an opportunity to help the community.

“We selected Northern Rivers Conservatorium as they run a fantastic music program in schools and reducing the cost helps the program to extend a bit further,” CEO Margot Sweeney told the publication.
