In New York, A New Charter Opens Its Doors

IRVING, N.Y.–The Seneca Nation of Indians FCU has officially opened its doors.

The first day of operations follows years of efforts by backers to open a credit union to serve Native-American communities.

"The New York Credit Union Association is proud to welcome yet another new credit union to our statewide movement," said NYCUA President and CEO William J. Mellin. "The Seneca Nation of Indians Federal Credit Union is the latest example of how more and more New Yorkers are choosing the not-for-profit cooperative model over traditional banks. The Association congratulates the leadership team at SNI FCU, and we look forward to helping them advance their mission and serve their members."

Earlier this year CUToday.info profiled the efforts by one primary proponent behind Seneca Nation of Credit Unions, who has sought to become an “evangelizer” for credit unions. Stephen Scott has now helped to charter two different CUs. His story and that of Seneca Nation of CUs can be found here.
