JACKSON, Mich.–Sheriff’s deputies here who pulled over drivers did not give out tickets, but instead distributed Christmas gifts as part of an initiative launched in conjunction with American 1 Credit Union.
The credit union joined with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Meijer stores so that when sheriff’s deputies pulled over drivers during traffic stops near the E. Michigan Ave. and Airport Road Meijer stores the officer would initiate the stop, chat with the driver and get some information regarding the driver’s Christmas list. According to the credit union, while that was taking place American 1 employees would start shopping as other deputies waited to deliver the gifts.
In all, more than $5,000 worth of gifts, including video game consoles, toys and gift cards was distributed—and no one received a ticket.
