Is Hauptman’s Bid For CFTC Role Losing Momentum?

By Ray Birch

WASHINGTON — As speculation mounts over President Trump’s next pick to lead the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, one name — NCUA Chairman Kyle Hauptman — has been seen as a strong match for the role, though latest signals suggest his odds are fading.

Hauptman has been touted in industry circles and by at least one source close to CUToday.info as a compelling candidate because of his pro-crypto orientation and regulatory experience. Yet recent reporting shows that his name is no longer appearing among the frontrunners being openly considered for the post. Meanwhile, steps by the White House and political maneuvering elsewhere appear to be tilting the balance away from him.

Kyle Hauptman

Late last month the White House officially withdrew Brian Quintenz’s nomination to serve as chair of the CFTC. With Quintenz off the table, the Administration is under pressure to select a successor who can shape U.S. regulation of crypto markets — from spot-market rulings to the treatment of stablecoins as collateral.

To many observers, the next CFTC chair will set the tone for the U.S. crypto infrastructure — whether the regulatory regime encourages innovation or reins in risk.

CUToday.info previously reported that the White House was considering tapping Hauptman to lead the CFTC. According to a Capitol Hill source cited by CUToday, his name surfaced alongside former commissioner Jill Sommers. CUToday.info noted that Hauptman’s strong pro-crypto record made him a logical fit.

Still, the fact that his name is largely absent from recent news cycles and in none of the shortlists circulating among insiders suggests his candidacy may be slipping.

At the same time, other names are rising to the top. Reporting from Crypto In America indicates that Mike Selig, chief counsel on the SEC’s Crypto Task Force, is now viewed by close sources as the leading contender for the chair position. Selig is said to be under heavy vetting in White House circles. His profile — with experience across both SEC and CFTC domains — matches the qualities that strategists say the Administration seeks in a nominee tasked with harmonizing crypto oversight across agencies.

CUToday.info has reached out to NCUA for comment on Hauptman’s rumored candidacy, but the agency declined to comment.
