TOPEKA, Kans.—The Republican-controlled Kansas Senate has overridden a veto by GOP Gov. Sam Brownback of a bill that imposes new rules on so-called “ride-sharing” services such as Uber.
The bill, which had strong support from the Kansas Credit Union Association, will now go into law. The bill requires drivers for ride-hailing companies to undergo background checks by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and to also carry additional auto insurance coverage beyond the $1 million Uber offers when drivers are logged into its network or transporting passengers. Uber had said the new law will cause it to exit Kansas.
