Landslide in Alaska Occurs Near CU’s Offices

KETCHIKAN, Alaska–A landslide here that led to the closure of a major road and the loss of a number of homes occurred just behind the main office of Tongass Federal Credit Union. Although it closed its office, the office was not damaged and no staff were affected.

One person working as a volunteer as part of the cleanup was killed as the result of heavy rains that contributed to the landslide in this mountain-side community along the Inside Passage in southeastern Alaska. Three people were injured.

An evacuation order was issued for portions of the city while officials assessed the risk of more damage or additional landslides.

‘Hearts are Broken’

“Our hearts are broken over the loss of life,” said Helen Mickel, CEO of Tongass FCU, in a statement posted on LinkedIn. “We are deeply sorry for those dealing with the loss of property. We also stand ready to help where we can with emergency loans and assistance as needed.”

Mickel also thanked all those who had reached out with offers of help.

An emergency shelter has been opened at the local high school where a dozen people were staying as of Monday morning, according to media reports.
