FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn.—Steve Ahlness, well-known to many as the former president and CEO of Greater Minnesota Credit Union, has died.
Mr. Ahlness was 63. Ahlness lead GMCU for almost 37 years, beginning in 1977, overseeing asset growth from $1.5 million to $150 million. He was named Minnesota CU Network Professional of the Year in 2005, and later inducted into the Credit Union Hall of Fame. He was also active in numerous community causes. Ahlness oversaw the merger of Greater Minnesota CU into SPIRE Credit Union. A number of branches of SPIRE will be closed today from 10:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. so staff can attend a memorial service.
