MCUL Billboards Target Lawmakers

SOUTHFIELD, Mich.—The Michigan CU League is backing a new billboard campaign in the Lansing, Mich., market that targets lawmakers driving to the state capital as part of an effort to fight a bill that would expand payday lending.

In all there are 27 billboards in the Lansing area and along the I-96 route in and out of Grand Rapids, according to the league. The billboards will be up through December.

Kieran Marion, VP-government affairs for MCUL & Affiliates, said a hearing on the bill during the lame duck session is still possible this fall, but he added that the likelihood of any movement on the bill is declining. The bill is likely to carry over to 2015, the league reported.

The MCUL is asking credit unions to look for instances where they have helped a member who found themselves caught in a cycle of bad debt from payday lenders, and to share that information with the MCUL government affairs staff as well as with their lawmakers if they have the opportunity.
