MasterCard Plans Broad Rollout Of Facial Biometrics For Security

PURCHASE, N.Y.–Saying it will eliminate the need for passwords, MasterCard said it will roll out later this year a facial biometrics app for authentication of online purchases. As CUToday.info earlier reported here, the rollout of the technology follows a four-month pilot that MasterCard conducted with First Tech FCU.

In that case, MasterCard said the pilot was successful based on its perceived ease of use and superiority to passwords. First Tech plans to launch a market-ready implementation of the Identity Check mobile app during the second half of 2016.

Biometrics as a means of security continues to grow in popularity, including outside the U.S. ATMs in Brazil, Japan and India have all been deployed using biometrics-based ID verification.
