WASHINGTON—NAFCU and CUNA continue to call for grassroots support for the data security bills introduced in the House and the Senate last month.
H.R. 2205 was introduced Friday by Reps. Randy Neugebauer (R-TX), and John Carney (D-DE). S. 961was introduced earlier last month by Sens. Tom Carper (D-DE) and Roy Blunt (R-MO), both members of the Senate Banking Committee.
The two bills, both titled the Data Security Act of 2015, would set national data security standards for merchants, outline a process for breach notifications and recognize financial institutions’ compliance with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act’s information security requirements.
NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger urged member credit unions to reach out to their lawmakers and to show their support for the bills. NAFCU credit unions can weigh in on the measures with representatives and senators by visiting NAFCU’s Grassroots Action Center.
“As the House will be in recess (the week of April 4th) and representatives will be in their districts, this is an opportune time for you to reach out to your members of Congress about the importance of data security and the issues that are important to your credit union,” Berger said in his message to member credit unions.
As CUNA did following the introduction of S. 961, the trade association is rallying support for H.R. 2205 with a grassroots action alert, explained Vice President of Political Affairs Richard Gose. “We are fortunate to have a lot of credit unions engaged, with well over 350,000 CU members engaged on this issue since the beginning of the year. We believe this has had a significant impact on getting these bills introduced and will help to move them along quickly.”
