WASHNGTON—The impact of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) on credit unions was a primary topic of discussion when NAFCU met with the FCC last week.
NAFCU Executive Vice President of Government Affairs and General Counsel Carrie Hunt reiterated concerns regarding how the interpretation of the TCPA is affecting credit unions during a meeting with FCC Chairman Ajit Pai's staff.
The meeting focused on NAFCU's ongoing concerns about the commission's 2015 TCPA order and how it makes it more difficult for credit unions to contact members about potentially fraudulent activity, identity theft and data breaches.
The meeting also covered the ongoing ACA International lawsuit regarding the 2015 order. The suit, which NAFCU joined in September 2015, is seeking a review of the order. Oral arguments were heard in the case in October; the court could issue a decision at any time, noted NAFCU.
NAFCU said FCC staff were receptive to the association's concerns about the regulatory burden on credit unions. Also attending the meeting were NAFCU Director of Regulatory Affairs Alexander Monterrubio and Regulatory Affairs Counsel Ann Kossachev.
Earlier this year, NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger wrote Pai to urge action on credit unions' concerns about the TCPA order.
