ALBANY, N.Y.—The New York Credit Union Association has joined the class action lawsuit filed against Home Depot in the wake of the national retailer’s widespread data breach.
In a message to the association’s member CUs, Board Chairman Laurie Baker, also COO at The Summit FCU in Rochester, announced the decision. Baker said the NYCUA “reviewed the ongoing threat posed by merchant data breaches, and ultimately decided to join the class action lawsuit against Home Depot as a named plaintiff.”
The association joins CUNA, Georgia Credit Union Affiliates, the Michigan CU League, the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues and a handful of CUs as plaintiffs in the case.
“Home Depot's massive data breach may result in as much as $3 billion in fraud,” Baker said in the letter. “The Association strongly believes the retail chain failed to take adequate security measures to protect consumers' personally identifiable information, and is therefore seeking damages on behalf of New York's credit unions.”
