VIENNA, Va.— Navy Federal Credit Union has temporarily closed several overseas branches in the Middle East and North Africa following direction from U.S. military base leadership amid heightened regional tensions.
The closures affect locations at Naval Support Activity Bahrain, Isa Air Base and the credit union’s branch in Djibouti, according to the credit union.
John Menoni, SVP of Branch Operations at Navy Federal Credit Union, said the organization is coordinating closely with military authorities as conditions evolve.
"Navy Federal continues to operate in coordination with, and at the direction of, base commands. At this time, a limited number of overseas locations—including Naval Support Activity Bahrain, Isa Air Base, and our Djibouti branch—have been temporarily closed based on guidance from base leadership. We will continue to follow that direction while prioritizing the safety of our team members serving abroad."
The closures come as security conditions in parts of the Middle East have prompted precautionary steps at some U.S. military installations and facilities supporting service members. Navy Federal operates branches on numerous bases worldwide to serve active-duty personnel, veterans and their families.
Despite the temporary closures, the credit union said members deployed or stationed overseas continue to have access to digital services and support resources.
"As a mission-driven, member-owned cooperative, Navy Federal Credit Union is closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and remains mindful of the potential impact global events may have on our field of membership. We take our responsibility to serve our members personally and are committed to supporting them through any challenge or deployment," said Menoni. "Eligible members can access deployment-related assistance through Navy Federal Online, where information will be updated as available support options evolve."
Navy Federal is the largest credit union in the United States, with more than 14 million members and more than $170 billion in assets. The institution maintains a large network of domestic and overseas branches specifically designed to serve members of the U.S. armed forces and Department of Defense personnel.
