OXFORD, Miss.—A special election is being held here to fill a vacant seat for Mississippi’s 1st congressional district.
The vacancy was created by the death of Rep. Alan Nunnelee, who died Feb. 6. Twelve names are on the ballot from the Republican party, meaning it’s highly unlikely anyone will win a clear majority, which will lead to a run-off among the top two finishers. CUNA’s Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) and the Mississippi CU Association are backing Mike Tagert in the race; Tagert is currently commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
“Just because it’s not an election year doesn’t mean elections aren’t going on,” said CUNA’s Trey Hawkins, VP-political affairs. “We view these races as an excellent opportunity. When a lot of other groups and PACs are shying away from special elections, we see it as an opportunity to engage with candidates and develop strong relationships.”
Last week a CUNA-backed candidate, Daniel Donovan, won a special election to become Staten Island, N.Y.’s new congressman, representing the 11th congressional district. Donovan also had the backing of the New York Credit Union Association.
Later this year in July, there will be another special election, this one to fill the seat vacated by the resignation of Rep. Eric Schock. Credit unions are backing Republican Dan Lahood in the party primary on July 7. The general election will follow in September.
