WASHINGTON—Two Kenyans won the Cherry Blossom Credit Union 10-Mile Run yesterday on a beautiful morning, with the event attracting thousands of people and raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for Children’s Miracle Network.
Meanwhile, in Sacramento, Calif., thousands also turned out for the Credit Union SacTown Ten-Mile Run, which raises funds for Children’s Miracle Network in that market.
In Washington, the namesake cherry blossoms in full bloom, Kenyans Stephen Sambu and Mary Wacera won the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively. For Sambu, who finished with a time of 43:20, it was the second year in a row he has won the event. Sambu finished seven seconds ahead of Jacob Riley. Five of the top 10 men’s finishers were Kenyan.
Wacera won the women’s race by just one second (48:33), just a stride ahead of Cynthia Limo, who finished at 48:34. The top five women’s finisher’s were all Kenyans.
In all, approximately 2,500 runners participated in the race, which wraps around the National Mall and Tidal Basin and which was shortened by a half-mile due to an accident along the race course earlier in the day.
Numerous credit unions had teams in the race, as did the offices of a good number of members of Congress. The event included activities for non-long distance runners, as well as a kids run.
In the Credit Union SacTown Ten-Mile Run, Jordan Chipangama won the men’s event with a time of 48:24, six seconds ahead of second-place finisher Shadrack Biwott. Jane Kibii won the women’s division with a time of 54:17, nearly a full minute ahead of second-place finisher Kristen Zaitz, who finished at 55:11.
The Sacramento event also included a five-mile run and a one-mile run/walk.
