Online Fraudster Sentenced

ATLANTA—Although most online fraudsters go uncaught and unpunished, one hacker has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Sergei Nicolaevich Tsurikov of Estonia entered a guilty plea in 2012 to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and computer intrusion related to a network intrusion at RBS WorldPay, which led to $9 million in fraudulent ATM withdrawals.

The crimes took place in 2008; the plea was entered with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Estonia.

Tsurikov, who was extradited to the U.S. to face the charges, has also been ordered to pay restitution totaling $8.4 million. Sonya Martin of Chicago, was also sentenced to 30 months in prison for the same scheme. In the RBS WorldPay case, the breach is believed to have involved as many as 1.5-million cardholders.
