NEW YORK--OpenAI is preparing what could be the most significant overhaul of ChatGPT since the launch of the chatbot that helped ignite the generative AI boom, with plans to transform the platform into a broader “super app” that combines coding tools, AI agents and third-party services.
According to PYMNTS, citing the Financial Times, the effort is part of a broader strategy to attract more enterprise customers and create new revenue streams ahead of a potential initial public offering. The report said OpenAI is reorganizing around the idea that AI agents — rather than standalone chatbots — will become the primary way users interact with artificial intelligence.
The changes are expected to begin rolling out in the coming weeks through updates to ChatGPT’s web and mobile experiences. PYMNTS reported the upgrades will steer users toward OpenAI services such as its Codex coding platform, image-generation capabilities and applications from outside partners, while positioning ChatGPT as the gateway to more advanced AI tools.
“It will transcend the actual surface … what we’re building towards is where you have your own personal agent that is capable of helping you … across everything in your life, be it personally or at work,” Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI’s head of core product and platform, told the Financial Times, according to PYMNTS.
The vision includes a single AI assistant that can be accessed across mobile devices, desktops, the web and even voice interfaces in vehicles.
The push comes as competition intensifies across the AI sector. PYMNTS Intelligence recently found that while ChatGPT remains the leading chatbot for personal use, Anthropic’s Claude has gained traction in workplace settings. According to PYMNTS, 81% of Claude users said AI is either essential to their jobs or significantly improves productivity, compared with 71% of ChatGPT users.
