BAY CITY, Mich.—A Bay County man has been sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison for robbing Sunrise Family Credit Union at gunpoint last year.
U.S. District Judge Thomas L. Ludington sentenced 45-year-old Tony W. McGillen to 152 months behind bars and ordered him to pay $8,101 in restitution, including $200 for trauma counseling for credit union employees.
McGillen pleaded guilty in May to bank robbery and brandishing a firearm during a violent crime, admitting he stole nearly $8,000 from the Hampton Township branch on April 9, 2024. Prosecutors said he pointed a pistol at two tellers, threatened to shoot them, and fled with the money in his mother’s white Buick Rendezvous.
The FBI identified McGillen after releasing surveillance photos, including images of a distinctive “wedding ring tattoo.” Witnesses told investigators McGillen bragged about his sudden cash and purchased a grill shortly after the holdup. He was arrested April 27, 2024, and authorities later recovered a handgun matching the one used in the crime.
McGillen, who was on parole at the time, has at least 15 prior felony convictions, including child abuse, home invasion, and larceny.
