Pennsylvania CUs Getting Not-So-Sweet, Up-Close Look At Data Breaches

HERSHEY, Penn.–Some of Pennsylvania’s credit unions are getting a personal look at the threat from data breaches.

Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, the owner of Hershey Park, the Hershey Hotel, Hershey Park Stadium, the Hershey Lodge, and other attractions and properties, is reporting that it has experienced a credit and debit card information breach and that customers using their credit or debit cards between Feb. 14 and June 2 likely had their card data compromised.

That time period covers when the Pennsylvania CU Association hosted its annual conference in May at the Hershey Lodge. According to the Pennsylvania CU Association, Hershey is offering those who are affected with 12 months of identity theft protection from Experian.

“Like it or not, data breaches have become a more common occurrence over the past few years,” said PCUA President and CEO Patrick Conway in a statement first published by the association. “That is why we have developed Sherpa Identity Theft and Restoration to allow credit unions to offer a solution to their members who may be at risk.”

The Association said it will follow up with Hershey to monitor the situation going forward.

In another data breach, the Army National Guard confirmed that members from as far back as 2004 are being warned their personal information may be at risk due to a cyber-attack, separate from the massive Office of Personnel Management hack, that compromised the National Guard's computer-stored information. The National Guard breach is believed to have compromised members’ names, full Social Security numbers, addresses, dates of birth and other private information.
