Police Shoot, Kill Alleged Robber of CU Branch

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.–A man who was allegedly part of a robbery attempt at a credit union here was shot and killed by police.

Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew in Virginia said, Steven Williams, 39, of Hampton, Va. and two others were involved in an armed robbery at the Jefferson Avenue branch of Navy FCU.

Police alleged Williams showed a weapon during the robbery and was given a bag that contained an undisclosed sum of money. After police responded, they spotted the suspects’ vehicle and cornered it at a shopping plaza where, with their weapons drawn, officers ordered the driver to exit the vehicle, according to Drew.

Had Gun in Hand

The first two people exited the vehicle without incident, while Williams exited the car with a gun in his hand.

"He points that firearm as he is getting out of the vehicle in the direction of the officers” and was shot by police, Drew said during a press conference.

Williams was transported to a hospital where he died.
