Protesters Deface CU Facility, Claiming It is 'Major Supporter’ Of Police

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.–Protesters who were part of a rally here in response to the shooting of a young man by police defaced a credit union facility, saying the CU is a “major supporter” of the police union.

The protesters, organized by Black Lives Matter Minneapolis, had been maintaining an encampment at a police precinct for 18 days, before Minneapolis police dismantled the encampment. They were seeking to raise awareness of and further an investigation into the shooting of Jamar Clark. Federal authorities are now involved in the investigation.

Clark, who is African-American, was shot by an officer and there is debate around whether he was wearing handcuffs at the time of the shooting.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, approximately 90 minutes after the rally protesters entered a Government Center building where a branch of Wings Financial Credit Union is located. There, protesters used window paint to write messages on WFCU’s windows, such as “Justice for Jamar,” while others used expletives referring to the police. The Star-Tribune reported that protesters called the credit union a “major financial supporter of the police union.”
