ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Nusenda CU may soon hold the naming rights to Albuquerque Public Schools new football stadium.
The move comes shortly after the $1.5-billion CU changed its name from New Mexico Educators FCU to Nusenda, and received mixed reviews among the community and membership, with some saying the name is a “made-up word.” (Objections To New Name Gets Some Local Media Coverage)
The Albuquerque Public Schools policy and instruction committee gave the green light on a possible name change at what is now called Community Stadium, KRQE News 13 reported.
If the agreement is reached, the stadium will be called Nusenda Credit Union Community Stadium. The deal would be for eight years with a price tag of just under $640,000, or roughly $80,000 a year. After 20% goes to the deal broker, Albuquerque Public Schools and its Education Foundation will get the rest – 65% to currently unfunded athletics like middle-school sports and the rest to academics.
“We actually started discussions almost a year ago,” Nusenda marketing staffer Anneliese Elrod told the news station. “We have a 79-year history of partnering with APS so we were excited to talk.”
