Robber’s Getaway Route Means Arrest Within 11 Minutes

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Police here say an alleged credit union robber didn’t plan his escape route very well, resulting in being stopped just 11 minutes after the robbery was reported.

Elmer Wiman, 66, was arrested by state troopers here after allegedly robbing a branch of Heritage FCU. Wiman, who is listed as a resident of Bridgeport, Ill., allegedly walked into the branch, placed a handgun on the counter and demanded cash. Wiman left the credit union and headed north on Highway 41, a route that took him directly past the Indiana State Police post in Evansville, where police had already been issued a “Be on the Lookout” alert after the teller at the CU provided both a description of Wiman and his vehicle. Sheriff Dave Wedding told local media: “I think I would have chosen a different route for my escape.”
